FAQ.

Answers to our most commonly-asked questions.

  • What does an excellent application look like?

Excellent applications have the following characteristics. A Christian founder. A high-growth strategy. They are committed to having a positive impact in their community. They have a clear exit strategy for our investment.

  • What ticket sizes are you targeting?

Our minimum check is $250,000 USD, but we would love to invest more where appropriate. The reason for that is the amount of investment our team makes in each deal. We need a company capable of certain scale to make that investment practically possible.

  • What kind of companies do you invest in?

We’re not limited to company’s size, location, or industry; we’re primarily interested in the company’s Founder. When we find a Founder who wholeheartedly desires to make a difference in their community, that’s our sector. And wherever we find these Founders, that’s our geography.

  • What position do you take in the companies you invest in?

We take equity positions in companies and back Founders to lead their companies better than anyone else can.

  • How involved will you be in the strategy and direction of the company?

The best investors offer Founders both strong challenge and loads of support.

We are equipped to assist in three areas: character development, practical skills, and strategic nous.

Our belief is that your character bleeds out of you. Who you are when no one is looking is fundamental. We want to help you develop your character in practical ways. Our team can do that.

The second thing we can help with is practical skills. Founders are likely to have loads of skills, but they might need some help too. We have the ability to help Founders with practical skills, such as forecasting cash burn, governance, and IP’s. We can look through practical skills and maybe we could help develop some of the gaps if there are any.

Lastly, the team has some strategic nous and a network with even more. Founders have access to this. We have real world exit experience, useful when the day comes.

  • Where does Fund1 sit on the investment spectrum?

Fund1 sits in a gap between Impact Funds and traditional Venture Capital, focusing on Christian founders leading early-stage growth companies committed to impact beyond profit. We aim for returns higher than a typical Impact Fund but below the maximum sought by traditional VCs. This approach allows us to support businesses committed to impact beyond profit.

  • Why would an investor invest their money with GoodWork?

They believe we can execute on our focus to find and invest in companies that can perform financially, and actually make a difference in their community.

Another good story.

Mel and David, two working parents, started an organic baby food company inspired by their own journey into parenthood.

Even before becoming parents, Mel and David strongly valued nutrition and enjoyed a healthy diet.

When their son was born, they maintained their careers and this meant they often relied on ready-made baby foods. The pair quickly realised their baby was missing out because these meals had very little nutritional value.

Mel and David decided to start an organic baby food company to ensure that healthy, delicious meals for babies and toddlers were readily and affordably available. They also wanted them to be delivered before parents got home from work, making meal times even more convenient.

They heavily researched the marketplace and worked with a Dietitian to ensure meals were genuinely nutritious. They were able to mass-produce these meals cost-effectively, without making nutritional compromises, and this meant they could offer meals at a price that was comparable to poorer nutritional alternatives.

With strong family values, Mel and David eventually branched out into ready-made family meals as well. They wanted to enable families to sit around the dinner table and enjoy a nutritious meal together, without the hassle of preparing the food. However, they actually don’t make a profit from these meals. They simply have a heart to see families thrive, and provide these meals as a one-stop shop so busy parents can get their children nutritional meals when they order their own.

At the moment, Mel and David want to produce a healthy profit for their investors, but they have a different goal for their company once they get an exit. They dream of helping eliminate malnutrition among the needy, and their lifelong ambition is to extend their charitable arm towards Africa — particularly Zambia and Tanzania. They want to achieve this with their children, as they continue to grow up eating nutritional meals around their table. That’s good work.
